- W3207986260 abstract "In the past two decades new ways of understanding school mathematics andmathematical thinking have developed and spread. They have had a considerableimpact on the planning and assessment of mathematics in schools. The developmentI want to discuss here is perhaps the most significant of these new ideas, especiallywith regard to thinking in school mathematics. It concerns the introduction ofmathematical problem-solving into school mathematics. This developed out of abroadening of the ideas of what are the different outcomes of learning mathematics. The result of this development was more attention to the processes of doingmathematics and, in particular, to the use of problem-solving strategies. This shifthas also been supported by the growing acceptance of the constructivist theory oflearning in mathematics. For the central idea of this theory is that students learn byactive meaning-making and involvement in their own learning processes. This typeof activity is especially evident in the solution of mathematical problems and in theuse of general solution strategies." @default.
