- W3208049294 abstract "Abstract Biological processes, mainly heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, gastrointestinal secretion, and gastrointestinal motility, follow a 24-h cycle called the circadian rhythm. Chronotherapy deals with the administration of drugs in synchrony with biological rhythm. Recent advancements in chronotherapeutics paved the way for developing pulsatile drug-delivery systems based on biopolymers, allowing the release of encapsulated drugs after the programmed lag phase. Hydrophilic biopolymers swell in aqueous fluids due to typical polymer chain relaxation and glassy–rubbery thermodynamic transition. Subsequently, the swelled biopolymers may erode or dissolve in the aqueous fluids resulting in the drug’s release. This chapter attempts to explicate the effect of circadian rhythms in various disease states and provide a detailed overview of the current state of the art of designing oral pulsatile drug-delivery system based on biopolymers, where swelling and rupturing; erosion or dissolution of coating membrane; and change in permeability of the coating membrane are the main criteria for the release of the drug." @default.
