- W3208367631 abstract "Complex agglomerations of multiple units embodied as a whole, city regions are not represented in their entirety in the global arena. While some parts of the metropolitan suburban space represent the city globally, others are eclipsed or remain as trash-space for the urban core. Current research argues that suburban spaces on the margins of large cities are produced through the state’s perception of how it wants the periphery to be. The present chapter, using two place-specific case studies in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area, explores the production of suburban space at the margins of Kolkata city. These locales have been deliberately chosen as areas outside the periphery, a paradigm that represents the metropolis on global platforms. Metropolitan governance is strongly state controlled and contextualised within the political structure of this region of India, which exhibits an incoherent suburban space. While this space is unstable, it is, however, a norm with respect to the urban Global South." @default.
