• W3208384429 abstract "Virtual reality (VR) has become more and more established over the last years, yet it still faces several issues of gender fairness and inclusivity. We argue that besides known problems such as insufficient catering to women's processing style of visual clues, stereotypes can also limit females' access to VR. We present a study in which we explore the gender-stereotypical perception of VR users and how this perception can be influenced by one's first-hand experience with using VR, considering, the self-perception and gender of the participants. By referring to the Stereotype-Content Model (SCM), we assess participants' perceptions of VR users before and after they get to experience VR themselves. Results show that male participants show in-group favoritism regarding the perceptions of VR users, gamers and men, while female participants perceive these groups less as warm, but show in-group favoritism towards their group. However, after experiencing VR themselves, participants perceive VR users as generally warmer than before, an effect that seems slightly stronger with females. We discuss the results concerning SCM and their implications for reducing stereotypical perceptions and facilitate access to VR." @default.
