This study intended to investigate the effective model of PBL by identifying the pattern of project organization and management practiced by the high school English teachers in Malang. It employed qualitative design divided into two stages: the pilot study and the actual study stage. The pilot study was intended to examine the PBL implementation to obtain sample research according to the set of indicatorsconstructed based on the defining feature of PBL described byThomas (2000),Railsback (2002) andRavitz (2010The study was conducted in four senior high schools in Malang because the implementation of PBL by the teachers in those schools met the standard criteria. These schools are SMA Negeri 1 Malang, SMA Negeri 2 Malang, SMA Negeri 3 Malang and SMA Negeri 4 Malang. The data were obtained through classroom observation, in-depth interviews with teachers and students, and document study. In term of project organization, findings of the study indicated the importance of a) systematic plan of project integration with the regular English lesson in the syllabus to provide the students with sufficient background knowledge before engaging in project activities, and b) systematic project lesson design follows the pattern of the planning, the carrying out and the result stage in which each stage carried different activities. In term of managingproject activities related to the content knowledge, language skills, cognitive, soft skills and affectivedevelopment, the finding signified the importance of a) providing model, context in scaffolding project activities, b) conducting in-class and outclass monitoring and mentoring, c) including peer discussion and assessment in project work, d) maintaining the novelty of the project, and e) integrating technology in project design and presentation, setting the timeline and defining the role and responsibility of the student. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui model pembelajaran berbasis proyek yang efektif melalui identifikasi pola organisasi dan pengelolaan model tersebut dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris oleh guru SMA di Malang. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan kualitatif yang terbagi dalam dua tahap: studi visibilitas dan studi lanjutan. Studi visibilitas dimaksudkan untuk memperoleh sample penelitian yang ditetapkan berdasarkan standard penerapan model tersebut menurut Thomas (2000), Railsback (2002) dan Ravitz (2010), antara lain terkandung (a) investigasi masalah (b) berlangsung dalam kurun waktu beberapa lama (c) berpusat pada siswa, (d) memiliki kegiatan presentasi hasil, (e) bagian dari kurikulum, (f) melibatkan siswa dalam penyelidikan yang konstruktif dan (g) berhubungan dengan kontek nyata. Tahap kedua adalah studi lanjutan yang berfokus pada identifikasi pola organisasi dan manajemen proyek serta pengalaman belajar siswa untuk menampilkan dimensi model yang efektifPenelitian dilakukan di empat Sekolah Menengah Atas di Malang karena penerapan PBL oleh guru di sekolah tersebut memenuhi kriteria yang ditentukan. Sekolah ini adalah SMA Negeri 1 Malang, SMA Negeri 2 Malang, SMA Negeri 3 Malang dan SMA Negeri 4 Malang. Data diperoleh melalui observasi kelas, wawancara dengan guru dan siswa, serta analisa dokumen.Dilihat dari pola organisasi pembelajaran berbasis proyek, hasil penelitian menunjukan pentingnya a) perencanaan yang systematic dalam pengintegrasian proyek dengan materi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris regular di dalam syllabus untuk memastikan kecukupan pengetahuan awal siswa sebelum terlibat dalam kegiatan proyek, dan b) systematic rancangan pembelajaran yang mengikuti pola perencanaan proyek, pelaksanakan proyek dan presentasi hasil proyek. Dari sisi pengelolaan kegiatan pembelajaran yang berhubungan dengan pengembangan pengetahuan konten, ketrampilan berbahasa, kognitif, soft skill dan afektif, temuan menunjukan pentingnya a) permodelan kegiatan pembelajaran proyek terstruktur, b) pemantauan kemajuan belajar di dalam dan di luar kelas c) keterlibatan penilaian dan diskusi teman sejawat, d) kebaruan projek bagi siswa, dan e) pengintegrasian teknologi dalam desain dan presentasi proyek, menentukan jadwal, peranan dan tanggungjawab siswa.
