- W3208444847 abstract "We discuss the conclusions by Carsten Schradin [ 1. Schradin C. Corona, climate change, and evolved human behavior. Trends Ecol. Evol. 2021; 36: 569-572 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (2) Google Scholar ]. An evolutionary perspective on climate change mitigation (CCM) and its absence has merit. We agree that evolutionary adaptations – including egoism – can be barriers for effective CCM, but we disagree that humans are generally too egoistic for it. We believe that the author has understated human cooperativeness and disregarded relevant research from environmental psychology. While acknowledging evolutionary forces, environmental psychology research draws a more complex picture of human (in)action. Furthermore, we explain why technical solutions are limited. Consequently, we suggest that scientists communicate more purposefully on CCM (in)action and do not utilise evolutionary adapted barriers as an excuse for abandoning CCM. cultural traits (i.e., artefacts and behaviours) increase in complexity and effectiveness as a result of repeated social transmissions. negative feeling evoked by a discrepancy between attitude and behaviour belief in own ability to (individually or as a group) contribute to a desired outcome (e.g., CCM). efficiency gains through technological developments are nullified or even outweighed by altered usage patterns (e.g., driving longer distances). perception that a behaviour is commonly exhibited and/or (dis)approved in a given group. an approach to societal change that builds on the interaction between social, technological, and ecological systems. A socioecological transformation includes multifaceted changes in social, political, and economic domains, which are necessary to address socioecological crises, such as climate change." @default.
