- W3208493833 abstract "There is a fair amount of literature on motorized water craft injuries, towing related trauma and surfing injuries. However, there is limited research on most injuries sustained in non-motorized ocean sport activities. This study evaluated aid provided for non-motorized ocean activities by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department/Lifeguard Division in San Diego, California. The objectives of this retrospective analysis included: (1) identify the incidence and characteristics surrounding non-motorized ocean sport injuries; (2) better understand injuries sustained from marine animal encounters; (3) identify potential public health interventions to treat and prevent common non-motorized ocean sport injuries. Paper incident reports documenting assistance provided by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department/Lifeguard Division over a one year period (2017) were manually reviewed, imported into the Marine Activities Registry (MAR) and analyzed. Date, time of day, beach location, age, sex, whether victim was local or from out of town, injury details, need for medical transportation, and type of water activity were recorded. Incident reports were excluded if they were not related to a medical evaluation or rescue performed. A total of 8840 incident reports met inclusion criteria. 4656 (53%) involved water or cliff rescues without associated medical aid and 4190 (47%) involved medical aid. Stingray envenomations (46%) were the most common medical condition evaluated, followed by lacerations (19%) and abrasions (12%). Other commonly evaluated injuries included lower extremity trauma (4%), bee stings (4%), upper extremity trauma (3%) and head trauma (2%). Males were involved in more rescues and medical evaluations than females (58% vs 42% and 60% vs 39% respectively). The greatest incidence was noted in beachgoers aged 15-19 and 20-24 (15% and 17% respectively). There was inadequate reporting (7%) of the type of water activity involved to analyze. In this study, the majority of assistance that lifeguards provided involved rescue of individuals. Stingray envenomations is a frequent injury for beachgoers in San Diego. Cutaneous injuries including lacerations and abrasions are common. These medical conditions, along with extremity trauma, head trauma and bee stings represent 90% of the health complaints of beachgoers in this study. Medical providers should be familiar with identifying and treating these conditions. These findings may aid in future public health interventions to make our coasts a safer place." @default.
