- W3208622997 abstract "Brachytherapy is a radiotherapy technique in which a radiation source is placed in or near the area to be treated. Radiation only affects an area around the radiation sources. The exposure of healthy tissues, located further away from the sources, is therefore lower. There are various types of brachytherapy that can be defined by the location of the radiation sources in the target area of treatment, the rate or “intensity” of the radiation dose directed at the tumor or the duration of the treatment. Brachytherapy is commonly used as an effective treatment alone or in combination with other therapies, such as surgery, external beam radiotherapy and chemotherapy for cancer of the cervix, prostate, breast, skin neoplasms and can also be used to treat tumors in many other anatomical regions. The likelihood and nature of potential sub-acute, acute or long-term side effects associated with brachytherapy depend on the location of the tumor treated and the type of brachytherapy used. If temporary brachytherapy is used, radioactive sources do not remain in the body after treatment, so there is no risk for people around the patient. If permanent brachytherapy is used, low-dose radioactive sources (seeds) remain in the body after treatment however, radiation levels are very low and decrease over time. Brachytherapy is considered a highly customizable technique that allows treatments tailored to each individual patient. The use of Electromagnetic tracking (EMT), the introduction of 3D printing applicators, image-guided adaptive brachytherapy and Intensity-Modulated brachytherapy represent new future perspective in this field." @default.
