No se detectaron escamas dermales.ABSTRACT A morphohistological study of the skin of Typhlonectes venezuelensis was made, for which 22 specimens were captured among juveniles and adults from the shores of Lake Maracaibo; 14 individuals were used for tissue analysis and 8 were kept in captivity. Skin samples were taken from the dorsal and ventral region, which were processed by routine histological techniques for light microscopy and electron microscopy. The results revealed that the tegument exhibits the same anatomical plan reported for other amphibians, differing only in the disposition and abundance of cellular structures. The ventral region registered a greater thickness (maximum 957.5μm) in relation to the dorsal region (around 815.0μm). The presence of Flask cells, an important taxonomic finding, is reported in the epidermis. In the dermis, two types of simple alveolar exocrine glands, mucosal and granular, were observed; being the first most abundant in the dorsal region, both essential for the survival of this species. It was found that the ecdysis of T. venezuelensis occurs approximately every 21 to 23 days, a fundamental phenomenon in all amphibians. No dermal scales were detected." @default.
