Veterinarians should care for animal health and welfare but they may also be involved in breeding management including the use of reproductive techniques.An online survey was conducted to find out how veterinarians who are involved in small animal reproduction regard ethical issues, which services they provide, how they discuss and handle ethical concerns and talk about them with breeders.In total, 83 participants mainly from Europe completed the online survey. Opinions on which interventions are ethical or not were heterogeneous. Most respondents (79.2 %) found it ethical to perform artificial insemination (AI) in dogs which did not reproduce naturally before. However, 62.7 % of participants stated that surgical insemination is not ethical. Elective cesarean sections are considered not ethical by approximately half of the participants. A closer look at responses to the questions of whether AI is ethical under specific conse quences suggests that most veterinarians are making ethical and value judgments in terms of what is justifiable or not. However, more than 80 % feel at least sometimes compromised by ethical conflicts.This research intended to foster discussion of this topic. International strategies should be developed to support solving conflicts and dilemmas related to ethical issues in dog breeding and assisted reproduction, as well as diminishing physical disabilities and heritable diseases.Tiere mehrerer Hunderassen haben ein erhöhtes Risiko, unter rassebedingten Gesundheitsproblemen durch anatomische Malformationen und erblich bedingten Erkrankungen zu leiden. Einerseits sind Tiermediziner für die Tiergesundheit und das Wohlbefinden verantwortlich, andererseits. bieten sie jedoch auch Dienstleistungen im Bereich des Zuchtmanagements und Techniken der assistierten Reproduktion an MATERIAL UND METHODEN: Mittels einer Online-Umfrage wurde ermittelt, wie Tiermediziner, die reproduktionsmedizinische Dienstleistungen anbieten, ethische Fragestellungen rund um die Hundezucht sehen, welche Dienstleistungen sie anbieten, wie sie mit den Besitzern ethische Fragestellungen diskutieren und wie sie in fraglichen Fällen vorgehen.Ander Umfrage nahmen insgesamt 83 Tiermediziner teil, die überwiegend aus europäischen Ländern stammten. Die Meinungen bezüglich der ethischen Vertretbarkeit spezifischer Dienstleistungen waren heterogen. Die Mehrheit der Teilnehmenden (79,2 %) erachtete es als ethisch vertretbar, Samenübertragungen bei Hunden durchzuführen, die sich noch nicht auf natürliche Weise fortgepflanzt haben. Jedoch gaben 62,7 % der Teilnehmenden an, chirurgische Besamungen seien nicht vertretbar. Elektive Kaiserschnitte wertete etwa die Hälfte der Teilnehmenden als nicht ethisch vertretbar. Eine genauere Betrachtung der Antworten zur ethischen Vertretbarkeit von Samenübertragungen in spezifischen Situationen zeigte, dass die meisten Veterinärmediziner durchaus wohl überlegt abwägen, in welchen Situationen Dienstleistungen vertretbar sind und in welchen nicht. Mehr als 80 % der Teilnehmenden gaben an, in diesem Zusammenhang zumindest gelegentlich in ethische Konfliktsituationen zu geraten.Die Umfrageergebnisse sollen die aktuellen Diskussionen rund um die Probleme in der Hundezucht ergänzen und fördern. Internationale Strategien sollten entwickelt werden, um Konflikte und Dilemmasituationen in Bezug auf ethische Fragestellungen in der Hundezucht und Techniken der assistierten Reproduktion zu vermeiden.
