- W3209028049 abstract "Current studies on colorectal cancer (CRC) centered on studying its molecular base have made it possible to classify it into different phenotypes, according to the molecular profiles. Understanding the molecular pathways of this tumor is vital for applying the knowledge derived from molecular bases and genetic alterations to clinical practice. This means that the anatomopathological diagnosis should always be accompanied by a molecular diagnosis. Through histologic and molecular study, the pathologist gleans new data that are essential in the therapeutic decision-making process and are also valuable for prognosis and prediction of response to therapy. This chapter treats the study of CRC from this perspective. Based on approaching the genetic-molecular context, the genetic alterations involved in the different carcinogenesis pathways of CRC are analyzed, paying particular attention to the microsatellite instability (MSI) pathway. The different methods of determining MSI are considered, highlighting the role played by immunohistochemistry. The chapter ends with a section on the study of biomarkers of diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive value associated with CRC and their application to clinical practice." @default.
