- W3209044211 abstract "Purpose: Probiotics (PB) are known to have a beneficial effect as supportive therapy in major abdominal surgery. It is however unknown whether PB application in pancreatic surgery can be recommended. To assess by systematic review and meta-analysis whether PB use is beneficial for patients undergoing pancreatic surgery. Method: According to PRISMA guidelines, clinical trials comparing outcomes of patients undergoing pancreatic surgery with and without PB were sought systematically in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science and CENTRAL. Outcome parameters were infectious complications, mortality and post-operative hospital stay. All results are presented as odds ratios (OR) or mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: 6 randomized clinical trials with a total of 363 patients were included in the final analysis. PB application resulted in a lower risk of infectious complications (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.25-0.66, P=0.0002), whereas there were no significant differences among mortality (OR 0.56, 95% 0.12-2.71, P=0.47) and length of post-operative hospital stay (MD -4.53, 95% CI -9.76-0.69, P=0.09). Conclusion: This meta-analysis shows that PB use may be beneficial for patients undergoing pancreatic surgery based on the results from published RCTs. The main PB effect seems to be a reduction of infectious complications. Although these results are based on a limited number of patients included in the underlying studies, a routine PB use in pancreatic surgery could be justified." @default.
