- W3209370209 abstract "Psychotherapy is often underutilized, and one reason may be that the possibility of talking to a therapist can elicit the fear that a person is a failure, inadequate, inferior, or unstable (Corrigan & Matthews, 2003; Fischer et al., 1982; Vogel et al., 2006). This fear is often referred to as the self-stigma of seeking help and can lead a person to view psychotherapy negatively (Vogel et al., 2007). Effective approaches to reduce self-stigma are needed to help increase people’s willingness to seek psychotherapy. Self-affirmation theory provides a new and potentially useful framework for creating brief interventions to attenuate self-stigma (Sherman & Cohen, 2006; Sherman & Hartson, 2011; Steele, 1988). According to self-affirmation theory, if people are able to compensate for threats to self-worth (i.e., feelings of inadequacy) by engaging in positive self-affirmations, they are less likely to anticipate self-stigma and more willing to consider therapy (Lannin et al., 2013; Seidman et al., 2019). This chapter summarizes self-affirmation theory and research, discusses how self-affirmation interventions can reduce help-seeking self-stigma, reviews current findings, and suggests future directions of research." @default.
