- W3209893576 abstract "In this study, AlCrB(O)N coatings were prepared by arc ion plating (AIP) under different nitrogen partial pressures, and the phase structures, mechanical properties, tribological and cutting properties were investigated. XRD, XPS and TEM results show that the coatings are mainly consisted of fcc -(Cr, Al)N and hcp -AlN phases, and B element is dissolved into fcc -(Cr, Al)N to form the fcc -(Cr, Al, B)N phase. O inclusions of 3.45 at.% ~ 5.34 at.% were revealed by XPS for AlCrB(O)N coatings deposited under different nitrogen partial pressures. The surface roughness and adhesive strength of AlCrB(O)N coatings increase with the increase of nitrogen partial pressures. The N-2 coating (3.5 Pa) exhibits the maximum hardness (36.6 ± 1.5 GPa) and modulus (468.7 ± 17.5 GPa). Tribological results show that the N-4 coating (4.5 Pa) has better wear resistance due to the high values of H/E (0.090 ± 0.005) and H 3 /E* 2 (0.277 ± 0.040 GPa). All AlCrB(O)N coated cutters show longer cutting life than AlCrN coated cutter, and the N-4 coated cutter presents the longest cutting life of 14 m. This is due to fact that formation of B-containing lubricative layer on the N-4 coated cutter reduces the abrasive and adhesive wear during the cutting process. • AlCrB(O)N coatings with various nitrogen pressures were deposited on high-speed steel substrates by multi-arc planting. • The phase and structure were determined by synthesis and comparison of XRD, XPS and TEM results. • Relationship between architecture, hardness, adhesion strength, friction and cutting performance were investigated. • Superior cutting performance was achieved by optimizing nitrogen partial pressure. • The wear mechanisms were thoroughly investigated by the analysis of the cutting morphology." @default.
