- W3210719690 abstract "This chapter provides a preliminary profile of the political life of the white clergy in a medium-size southern urban center: Greenville, South Carolina. As a preliminary to a more inclusive and detailed study, the authors mailed a questionnaire to a random sample of 164 Greenville clergymen during the winter of 1977, this represented approximately one-third of all area ministers. Like Quinley's activists, Greenville clergy cited self-motivation as most important: personal theology was vital to 67 per cent, personal political beliefs to 62 per cent, and personal goals as a minister to 62 per cent. Most research on the political views of Protestant ministers has found a striking relationship between theological orientation and political ideology. In theological terms, the less orthodox were likely to have more positive attitudes toward activism, but the orthodox were slightly more likely to be active. Thus, neither theology nor political orientation seemed to have a strong impact on the extent of activism." @default.
