- W3210844547 abstract "The purpose of the course is to provide students with an overview of social welfare institutions in the United States. This overview includes a history of social welfare, its foundational values, along with the major conceptual and theoretical perspectives associated with social welfare policy. Moreover, students will learn about the significance of social justice, civil rights, and economic issues to the practice of social welfare in the U.S. Social welfare policies related to children and the elderly, health care, and poverty are also discussed. Lastly, the course compares social welfare policy in the U.S. with those from other nations. The course is a requirement for the Human Services concentration within the University’s Sociology major and is directed at those students interested in careers in the social work profession. Since the course emphasizes a critical perspective, it was necessary to select a textbook that helps meet that objective, in addition to being linked with the Social Work Competencies established by the Council on Social Work Education. This course is heavily dependent upon class discussion, which occurs in various Blackboard discussion forums. Some examples of discussion board questions include: (1) thinking about a social injustice and connecting it to possible social welfare policies, (2) visiting one of a number of government or advocacy group websites and describing some of the data available there and what about it students found interesting, and (3) describing examples of social justice gained by a particular group and describing any pushback/backlash that occurred in response to those gains. In addition to three essay exams throughout the course, students are required to develop a research project/presentation over a social issue considered serious enough to warrant a social policy response." @default.
