• W3210963021 abstract "This collaborative content analysis activity requires students to analyze the representation of crime victims in stock photos using Google image search. Students will identify patterns in victim characteristics (e.g., gender, race, age) in the images. They will compare their observations to empirical patterns in victimization using National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) data to determine if the “typical victim” in the photos corresponds to reality. They will then critically evaluate the consequences of crime victim imagery, with a special focus on racial and gender disproportionality (i.e., the disproportionate representation of White, female victims). This activity is designed to elicit student engagement using student-centered reflection, hands-on data collection, and peer collaboration. It builds on the successes of prior media-based content analysis activities in criminology (e.g., Finley, 2004; Hipes, 2020). It can be used in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Deviance, or Victimology courses. In addition, it can be adapted for Introduction to Sociology (in a section on social construction). Two versions are provided: (1) a structured data analysis and discussion assignment that can be used as a class activity or take-home assignment (60-75 minutes), and (2) a shorter informal analysis and discussion (about 25-30 minutes).
