- W3211114119 abstract "Even before English became the global language, traditional concepts of the language classroom were criticised for placing the learning exclusively inside its four walls. Proponents of establishing 'living language links' have argued that tapping into the English used outside the classroom can support language learning in several ways. This chapter focuses on a course in a pre-service teacher education program in which student teachers get the chance to explore the teacher's role in a project which creates links between the classroom and the outside world. It describes the structure and some of the outcomes of this course, then explains key requirements for out-of-class language projects. It emphasizes the need to integrate out-of-class language experiences with the day-to-day work of the classroom. The chapter suggests that although there are good reasons for keeping in-school and out-of-school contacts with English separate, a majority of students are in favour of closer links between the classroom and their encounters with English elsewhere." @default.
