- W3211330312 abstract "The industrial sector produces wastes as by-products annually, and due to an inadequate waste management system, this leads to increased environmental pollution. This study explored the possibility of using polypropylene granules (PP) as a partial replacement for sand with the percentages of 0, 4, 8, and 12% by weight of PP added in a steel slag mixed concrete block pavement (CBP). Forty-eight paving blocks, forty-eight cylinders and forty-eight beams of steel slag mixed concrete with PP were prepared using a mix design of 1:1.17:3.56 (cement: sand: granite), respectively with water-cement ratio of 0.5 and cured for 7, 28, 56 and 90 days. Concrete samples were tested for compressive, split tensile and flexural strength tests. The result showed that the compressive, split tensile and flexural strength increased with an increase in curing days but decreased with higher addition of PP. The most effective percentage replacement was 4% of PP with 34.11, 0.66, and 4.73 MPa at 90 days for compressive, split tensile and flexural strength, respectively. The relationship between compressive strength and tensile strength was marginaly siginificant at 95% confidence level while the model for compressive strength and flexural strength in prediciting the 90th day strength was excellent with coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) value of 97.27%.
