- W3211361136 abstract "Irish English research foregrounds an indirect, face-threat avoiding, and democratically collaborative communicative style. In many socio-cultural contexts, directness and overt demonstrations of power are avoided in the Irish context, but sometimes there are contexts where directness is employed. This research investigates one such context, asking how directness is used in humorous interactions, and to what purposes. The chapter examines ‘edgy’, confrontational humour used in male-only interactions in a suburban Dublin sports club, finding that many of the humour strategies employed by speakers in Club Fingal directly challenge others. The analysis highlights identity moves, including hierarchy-maintenance, one-upmanship, brashness, alongside expressing closeness. Directness, face-threats and status-oriented behaviour are central parts of the performance of one type of normative masculinity in homosexual interactions in the club. The social practice of mocking is a form of entertainment which can also establish superiority. In many cases, on the surface at least, the humour is a prototypical normative masculine interactional strategy. Much of the humour reproduces perceived hierarchies, with mocking talk downward-directed. While this type of interaction is often labelled ‘harmless’, there are nevertheless underlying confrontational messages. The in-depth ethnographic analysis adopted here illustrates the complex relationship between language and culture, illuminating the constructionist nature of linguistic variation: speakers use ‘edgy’ humour to perform masculinity and flout established maxims of conversation for example." @default.
