A new method based on fractal theory to quantify pore structure evolutions within hydrate-bearing sands isintroduced. Effects of gas hydrate saturation and morphology on pore fractal characteristics in hydrate-bearing sands is clarified. Pore fractal characteristics have great potentials to estimate hydraulic and electrical properties in hydrate-bearing sands. Gas hydrates are potential future energy resources and possible environmental hazard triggers. Natural gas recovery from hydrate deposits and related environmental conservation requires precise characterizations of gas hydrate reservoirs which can be provided by well logging and X-ray CT scanning data. This chapter summarizes fundamental concepts and key principles in well logs and X-ray CT scans for gas hydrates in marine sediments. It provides a review of up-to-date research focusing on joint analyses of pressure coring based X-ray CT images and well logging data together with a pore structure characterization based on fractal theory. Applications of these pore fractal characteristics to estimations of physical properties in hydrate-bearing sediments are provided as case studies. Results show that the pore fractal characterization based on X-ray CT images is promising for quantifying how pore structures and physical properties in hydrate-bearing sediments evolve during gas hydrate production and environmental conservation. However, this method needs further investigations for it to be reliably applied to marine sediments containing abundant clay minerals." @default.
