We hypothesize that their development within a mathematical activity, which we call “numerical-algebraic,” could benefit the negotiation of epistemological breaks in the transition between arithmetic and algebra. The theoretical framework is that of the anthropological theory of didactics. We characterize the epistemological aspects of the “numerical-algebraic” activity based on a synthesis of research taking into account different approaches. We consider in particular the one aiming at modeling the teaching of algebra through a process of algebraization of calculation programs. Then we describe the main praxeologies in which this activity is constructed. Finally, we show that there is potential in French curricula to develop it but that it is subject to strong institutional conditions and constraints." @default.
