- W3211941055 abstract "Intersectionality has been one of the primary paradigm shifts in contemporary feminist scholarship, but inadequate attention to the different social contexts in which the “matrix of domination” is formed has created profusion of overlapping variations on the theory and may create western biases (Collins, 1990). I begin by reviewing select discussions of intersectionality and discussing the theoretical lacunae evinced by their profusion. I then detail research in Brazil, Israel, and India as examples where the U.S.-based conceptualizations of intersectionality may distort research. Finally, I argue for an expansion of intersectionality to address these concerns and suggest approaches which I find promising for conducting empirical, intersectional analyses outside of a Western context. Because the multiplicity of intersectionality can be synthesized into a coherent framework by linking each theorization to the specific local conditions and questions of interest, it may be more appropriate to speak of Matrices of Domination and Intersectionalities." @default.
