- W3212180569 abstract "Coping comprehends all the behaviours a person endorses when faced with stressful events during their life. Studies have shown that university is considered one of the most stressful times in someone’s life. Previous research also showed that students experience many stressors and events related to many factors, such as family, friends, work and more. People deal with these types of events by adopting either a problem-focused or emotion-focused coping strategy. This study focuses on how students with a generic propency to use an emotion-focused or problem-focused coping mechanism account for the use of these coping styles in actual situations. The stressful life events of 6 students of the University of Twente were examined to understand how they coped with the situations they have experienced and through the COPE inventory, the students’ generic coping tendencies were assessed. Results found out that independently from the generic tendency of the students, they use an emotion-focused approach more often than a problem-focused one; however, the students, who have a generic tendency towards problem-focused coping, tend to adapt their coping style according on the stressor. The results of this study can be used to better understand the approaches employed by students when faced with stressful events, and can be used to improve these strategies to employ a more efficient stress coping strategy." @default.
