- W3212864233 abstract "The Raising construction, together with Control, has received much attention in generative grammar due to its particular relation with the argument structure and thematic dependencies. Raising to subject refers to a movement type in constructions with such matrix predicates as ‘seem’, ‘appear’ where the thematic subject is semantically linked only to the embedded verb and where it is raised out of the lower clause to the higher clause for EPP/Case reasons, as illustrated below: [IP Johni [I’ -s [VP seem [IP ei to love Mary]]]]As the analysis indicates, John, the lower subject is an argument of love (John is a lover) but not of seem (John is not a seemer). Thus, John moves out of the lower clause to the higher clause for EPP/Case reasons. Nevertheless, one can always ask some crucial questions regarding this raising construction such as: do all languages exhibit raising phenomena? Do all languages have raising predicates? Can there be raising out of a finite clause? What motivation is there for such raising? Evidence from Sinhala further seems to add to this controversy as the lexical item vage in Sinhala which corresponds to the English raising predicate seem occurs in a finite clause. Further, vage has a similar distribution to the focus particle thamai and also to the other mood/modal particles. This paper examines these issues with respect to the raising to subject phenomenon with evidence from spoken Sinhala. As for methodology, the data consisted of natural speech and grammatical judgments of native Sinhala speakers. The theoretical basis is the Minimalism (Chomsky 1995), and Cinque (1999). Analysis and findings are in line with the native speaker judgments and cross linguistic facts and observations. The main claim in the paper is that Sinhala does not have a raising predicate and the lexical item in Sinhala (vage) that corresponds to the raising predicate ‘seem’ in English is actually an epistemic modal head." @default.
