- W3213327103 abstract "In the past, earthquakes have affected several large concrete dams and spillways. While no catastrophic failure has yet been reported, seismic safety assessment of these facilities is required by regulatory agencies. Concrete spillways are 3-dimensional structures that are especially vulnerable to earthquake with a strong component occurring in the direction of the weak axis of the piers. In order to assess the seismic stability of spillway piers, this paper presented a unique 3-dimensional structural analysis methodology. Specifically, the paper discussed a stability assessment methodology to bridge the gap between 3-dimensional linear elastic seismic finite element analysis of spillways piers, that could easily be done using commercial software, and a 3-dimensional extension of the gravity method to compute safety indicators accepted by the profession. Different methods for seismic stability of concrete hydraulic structures were first presented. The paper described the model and the earthquake response analyses. A 3-dimensional extension of the gravity method was then developed accounting for bi-axial moment interactions considering concrete cracking and uplift pressures. Three-dimensional seismic analyses of a 30 metre high gated spillway built 80 yrs ago was presented as an application example. Three-dimensional sets of spectrum compatible ground motions were also developed in the longitudinal, transverse, and vertical directions for return periods of 200 years, and 2500 years corresponding respectively to the operating basis earthquake and the maximum design earthquake for a typical site on rock located in the Ottawa Valley. It was concluded that the cohesion that could be mobilized over a compressed area has an important contribution to provide resistance against sliding. However, there are many uncertainties regarding the degradation of apparent cohesion upon crack opening-closing cycles. 13 refs., 3 tabs., 9 figs." @default.
