- W3213700861 abstract "Diabetic polyneuropathy is the most common cause of peripheral neuropathic pain. Oral medication is the mainstay treatment. It provides modest efficacy in pain relief but has systemic side effects. Capsaicin, the naturally extracted ingredient from hot chili peppers, acts on TRPV1 receptors. TRPV1 plays a role in somatic and visceral peripheral nerve inflammation, modulating nociceptive inputs to the spinal cord and brain stem. Topical capsaicin and other capsaicinoids are widely used as conventional medicine for pain relief. Topical capsaicin is available in several concentrations, ranging from 0.025%–8%, and formulations such as gel, lotion, cream, and patch. It has been tested in this indication for the past few decades. Higher concentrations, at least 0.075%, appeared to be more effective in pain control. The common side effect is local skin reaction with almost no systemic side effect. Therefore, topical capsaicin is one of the important armamentarium in relieving painful diabetic polyneuropathy." @default.
