- W3214046227 abstract "This book provides the reader with a comprehensive snapshot of the strain between the police and communities of colour. In a Post-Ferguson world, the authors present a balanced and empirical look at the challenge of policing in a free society. The book opens with a realistic and critical analysis of how people of colour communities and the police who serve and protect them, struggle in their relationship due in part to historical oppression. The text reminds us that in the time of slavery, the police acted as agents of a government on behalf of plantation owners rather than those who were enslaved. The foreword makes clear that the strain between the police and the community, particularly minority communities, has a historical context and that the ongoing story of this strained relationship continues to reveal negative outcomes. Deuchar, Crichlow, and Fallik tell a compelling story of how institutionalized and individualized racism and entrenched policing practices have slowed down the reform that is needed. The authors contrast the ‘warrior’ and ‘guardian’ roles in policing and illustrate alternative models that both the police as well as the community can be invested in. One of the strengths of this book is that the authors go beyond the traditional police–community rhetoric. The authors provide an inside look into the lived experiences and perceptions of law enforcement practitioners as well as the youth they serve. As we hear both sides of two different experiences, we discover invaluable insights that help to inform real possibilities for change. By hearing the stories of young men of colour who have found themselves to be targets of police interactions, the reader can begin to understand how critical it is for these two vastly different groups desperately need to partner with each other." @default.
