- W3214551864 abstract "Complementary alternative medicine (CAM) agents are increasingly being investigated for the treatment of clinical pain. Some dietary constituents might modify the pain pathway and have been suggested as therapeutic agents, since polyphenolic compounds, fatty acids, and carotenoids modulate the neuronal excitability of the peripheral nervous system, including the sensory system via the various voltage-gated ion channels, transient receptor potential channels, and neurotransmitter receptors under in vitro conditions. This review summarizes the evidence of the mechanisms underlying local anesthetic effects of dietary constituents on nociceptive neuronal activity associated with pain relief based on our recent in vivo experimental data. We also discuss the development of functional foods and the contribution of dietary constituents to the relief of clinical pain without side effects." @default.
