- W321473728 abstract "As incomes and car availability have risen, the amount of walking has fallen. This report discusses how this trend can be reversed by providing better pedestrian facilities and proper urban planning, and by locating land uses within walking distance of each other. It presents a study of walking in Singapore, and a statistical analysis which measures how trip purpose and other factors influence walking. Data were obtained by surveying about 2500 households and including in the sample all household members aged at least four. The questionnaire obtained data about stages of trips using different transport modes; almost all trips had some walking stages. The survey showed that, despite rising wealth and motorisation, walking still plays an important part in travel in Singapore. 38.9% of all trips use walking as the only mode, and this proportion varies from 45.6% for no-car households to 23.3% for multi-car households. The effects of gender and age, and walking times and distances, were also studied. A simple exponential modal split model was developed, which could help to assess the catchment area needed for various land uses to achieve certain modal split targets for walking. It provides an insight into the modal split between walking and motorised travel, suggesting that a 50-50 split occurs around 850m." @default.
