- W3214778885 abstract "Background: High resolutionCT(HRCT) is largely used in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, together with chest X-ray, to help patient management during hospitalization and follow-up. Little is known about the long-term pulmonary sequelae after COVID-19 infection. Aim: To characterize hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia with persisting pulmonary abnormalities during follow-up. Methods:220 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia were evaluated at 3–6 months after discharge with either chest X-ray or HRCT and categorized as recovered(REC) or not recovered(NOT-REC).HRCT available at hospitalization(HRCT0) and during follow up(HRCT1) were analyzed semi-quantitatively as:ground glass opacities(AlveolarScore, AS), consolidations(CONS) and reticulations (Interstitial Score, IS). Results:161/220(73%)patients showed disease resolution at HRCT0. NOT-REC(59/220;27%) were mainly older [63(27-85)years vs. 57(19-87);p=0.03], with a heavier smoking history [2(0-67)py vs.0(0-66);p=0.03],longer in-hospital stay [13(0-75)days vs.8(2-52);p=0.001],and lower P/F at admission [238(40-424)vs.319 (33-543);p=0.0009]. Compared to REC, NOT-REC displayed higher HRCT0 scores: AS(14(0–62)vs 5(0.2 - 44);p=0.005), CONS(1.9(0–26)vs0.8(0-18),p=0.02) and IS(11.5(0–29)vs 0(0-22),p<0.0001).On multivariate analysis, the presence of IS at HRCT0 was independently associated with radiological sequelae at HRCT1[OR0.05(0.005–0.63);p=0.02]. Conclusions: A minority of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia show persisting pulmonary abnormalities at their initial radiological follow-up. These patients are predominantly older with a heavier smoking history and longer hospital stay. The presence of reticulations at hospitalization may predict the persistence of radiological changes." @default.
