- W321487930 abstract "The Reproduction of Library Materials: 1988 in Review Selecting items for inclusion in a year's work article on reproduction of library materials is never easy, because of diversity of subjects covered. This year, where year's work articles have been allotted two-thirds of space they had last year, my overview of literature has had to be cursory at best. In sections that follow I have noted references that seemed to me likely to be of special interest to members of Reproduction of Library Materials Section of Resources and Technical Services Division of ALA. With one exception (Horder, 1987) everything listed was published in 1988. Subjects covered include use of microforms in libraries, micropublishing, and technical production of microforms. In addition there are sections on newer technologies, including optical disc and telefacsimile. And with more ways of reproducing library materials, question of copyright is of increasing concern to authors, publishers, and everywhere. My special thanks are due to Tamara Swora of Library of Congress for sending me so many useful sources, and to Chris Sokol, of Washington State University Libraries, who supplied a good many of references in section on bibliographic control. RLMS ACTIVITIES Jack Pontius (1988) wrote 1987 annual report for RLMS, while I did last year's version of year's work roundup (Dodson, 1988). Reflecting ever-changing technology, RLMS Technology Committee has changed its name to RLMS Electronic Imaging Technology Committee (Reports of Committees...Technology, 1988). BIBLIOGRAPHIC CONTROL Julian Warner (1988) described bibliographic control of microforms in British Library specifically, but referred to all major international sources of information on what has been published in microform. Anna Keller and Anthony Mullan (1988) produced a finding aid to dissertation research at Library of Congress. John Henneman's (1988) article on microforms on classical, medieval, and renaissance periods included a useful list of collections with locations. Auburn University Libraries received a $112,577 Title II-C grant to catalog two collections for OCLC's Major Microforms Project (News from Field, November 1988). Microform Review published its usual crop of useful articles and reviews, and for anyone interested in subject of bibliographic control of microforms all issues of this journal are a must. COPYRIGHT Copyright continued to make news both in North America and abroad. After a century of effort to bring United States into Berne Union, that country has finally joined Berne Copyright Convention, the oldest and most prestigious international multilateral treaty governing protection of copyrights (The United States Joins, 1988, 457). The law was expected to come into force in United States on March 1, 1989. The second five-year report of Register of Copyrights appeared (Five-Year Report, 1988), and RLMS program in New Orleans dealt with question of copyright in United States (U.S. Copyright, 1988). Richard Hopkins (1988) provided an overview of current situation in Canada, where revised Copyright received Royal assent on June 8, 1988 (Canada, 1988). The British Copyright, Designs and Patents Bill received Royal assent November 15, 1988 (News: New Copyright Act 1988). Raymond Wall (Aug. 1988) discussed situation in United Kingdom. With respect to copyright and photocopying Paul Gleason discussed the legal and philosophical roots of disagreement between publishers and librarians (Gleason, 1988, 1), while Nicholas Veliotes (1988) forecast situation vis-a-vis copyright and American authors and publishers in 1990s. The proceedings of Library of Congress Network Advisory Committee meeting (which considered intellectual property rights of those whose work appears in an electronic format) appeared (Intellectual, 1988), and Library of Congress also produced guidelines for fair use of optical disks (New and Noteworthy, 1988). …" @default.
