- W3215051737 abstract "Arthritis is an acute or chronic joint inflammation that often co-exists with pain and structural damage. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis. Inflammatory arthritis can be caused by autoimmune processes, as in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and crystal deposition-induced inflammation, as in gout. The etiology of arthritis varies with the type of arthritis. In RA, an autoimmune systemic inflammatory disorder, several genetic and environmental factors lead to activation and dysfunction of the immune system. In osteoarthritis, the major contributory factors include advancing age, female sex, joint trauma, and obesity. Gout has a rising prevalence worldwide, in close relationship with the obesity and metabolic syndrome epidemics. Based on their respective pathophysiological mechanisms, RA, osteoarthritis, and gout have different therapeutic targets. Conventional, biological, and novel small molecule disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs remain the mainstay of RA treatment. First-line pharmacological treatment for osteoarthritis comprises paracetamol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroid injections and tramadol to alleviate pain. Gout treatment requires first long-term serum urate lowering therapy with xanthine oxidase inhibitors, as well as prophylaxis for flares with low-dose daily colchicine. Novel therapeutic targets are emerging in all three types of arthritis through a drive from the need of more effective treatment options." @default.
