- W3215378858 abstract "Rationale: Mexico is the third country in the world with the highest death rate from covid-19. When the pandemic reached Mexico, it was already dragging a long epidemic of obesity and diabetes. Methods: An observational, longitudinal, and retrospective study was performed in the Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad de Ixtapaluca. Data from patients with positive to covid-19 was included. Demographic variables, serum-based biomarkers, and case mortality rate were collected. Categorical variables were reported as frequencies and percentages. Baseline characteristics were compared using an independent sample t-test between death patients and survivors. Results:Table 1.Demographic and clinical risk factors for mechanical ventilation and death in Covid-19Risk factorUnadjusted odds ratio (95% CI)Chi- squarep valueMale sex2.79 (1.36 – 5.74)8.650.005BIM > 29·9 kg/m21.98 (0.93 – 4.21)3.180.82Diabetes0.82(0.43- 1.58)0.320.62Hypertension1.02 (0.52-2.00)0.0051.00Ferritin>800ng/ml3.97 (1.51 – 10.43)8.280.005CI= Confidence interval BIM= body mass index; Open table in a new tab CI= Confidence interval BIM= body mass index; We aimed to describe the mortality rate and clinical characteristics in the SARS-CoV-2 infected Mexican population. A total of 197 patients were included. The mean age of patients was 49.8±13.9 years; 141 (71.6%) were men. The case mortality rate in all hospitalization areas was 37.1%, in critically ill patients in the ICU was 64.4%. The mortality risk factors were ferritin >800ng/ml (unadjusted OR 3.97) and male sex (unadjusted OR 2.79). Patients with a BMI between 35-39.9 kg/m2 (9.2%) had a 63.6% mortality rate. The 42.1% of the patients had chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. There was no statistical association between death and diabetes or hypertension with mortality (table 1). Conclusion: The mortality rate for critically ill patients with covid-19 is 1.7 times higher than the moderate disease. Obesity is related to the high mortality rate of covid-19 in Mexico, due to the fact that 75% of the Mexican population is overweight or obese. References: Hopkins J.
