- W3215697213 abstract "Background: There is still a need for a better understanding of gender and allergy-related asthma phenotypes. Mandatory condition of asthma is airway hyperresponsiveness(AHR), which may be confirmed by a positive methacholine bronchial challenge test(BCT). Purpose: To investigate the frequency of AHR in adult patients of both sexes with and without allergies. Material and methods: The study used information from a database of 2356 patients. All patients underwent a BCT. Patients are divided into five age groups (20-30; 31-40; 41-50; 61-60; >60). Patients with at least one positive skin prick test(SPT) to a common allergen were considered as allergic and those with negative SPT were considered as non-allergic. Logistic regression analysis was used to compare patient groups. Results: AHR was more common in allergic women than in non-allergic women (45.4 vs.37.2%, p=0.01). AHR was found equally often in women of all ages with allergies. The number of AHR in women without allergies increased with age. There were no significant differences between the first three age groups, but then the number of positive tests increases rapidly (first vs. fourth group p=0.002; first vs. fifth group p=0.0000004). Allergic men were much more likely to develop AHR than non-allergic men (48.5 vs.28.9%, p=0.000002). In allergic men, the AHR was significantly more common in the 20–30 age group compared with the 50–60 age group (p=0.008). Unlike women, AHR was equally common in men of all ages who did not have allergies. Conclusion: Unlike men, AHR cases increase significantly in women without allergies after the age of 50, possibly due to hormonal changes. The highest number of AHR is found in young men with allergies, which decreases with age." @default.
