- W3215726400 abstract "In the middle of the twentieth century there was a flourishing of Christian literature providing advice on contraception, family planning and sex education assumed parity of pleasure and desire between husbands and wives. This engagement with modern love and romance in the early twentieth century is arguably also the Church’s first attempt to form a positive theology of sexuality. Anglican theologian D.S. Bailey formalised this discourse in his ground-breaking historical and theological work on sexuality published between 1944–1969. At the heart of his understanding of love and sexuality is the ontological proposition that in sexual intercourse there is a mystical union of two bodies. Two literally became one-flesh. This chapter provides a brief genealogy of this idea of “one flesh” in modern Western Christian thought. It shows how Bailey deconstructed Victorian understandings of sexual union to enshrine greater equality in Christian marriage, and enable a pastoral response to homosexuality. Finally, I seek to explain, why, if mutuality and equality were at the heart of this new theology of sexuality and love, homosexual love remained unthinkable." @default.
