- W3216008557 abstract "Background: Inhaled medication is the cornerstone of treatment but 70% of the patients have wrong inhaler technique. It is unknown what the financial benefits are of more frequent instructions. We compared the annual economic costs of an instruction once yearly and multiple instructions in one year. Based on the literature, it is expected that inhaler technique will improve if more frequent instructions are being provided to patients. Method: Different aspects concerning the treatment process and poor and improved inhalation technique are analysed using a quantitative model-based approach. The parameters hospitalization, ED visits, GP and hospital visits, medication and loss of productivity days were included in the model. Health care databases were used to obtain information about costs and frequency of the different parameters. The impact of poor inhalation technique on the parameters were examined by available literature regarding the effect of more frequent inhaler instructions. A sensitivity analyses was performed to get more information about the impact of the parameters on the outcomes. The study is taken as a total cost approach, the savings can be achieved if the impact on the entire society is taken into account and not only savings achieved in healthcare. Results: 73% to 81% of the costs of unscheduled health-related events can be assigned to patients with poor inhalation technique in the Netherlands. More instructions in 1 year leads can save up to €40 million for COPD and €51 million for asthma per year due mostly due to less sickness leave. Conclusion: Providing more instructions leads to reductions in lost productivity costs (28% COPD and 69% asthma are employed)." @default.
