- W3216249562 abstract "The choice of imaging modality for the assessment and monitoring of tissue-engineered materials is dependent on their biochemical composition, structure and physiological and/or biomechanical function. While in vitro imaging of such materials can make use of radiation-based methodologies in experimental settings, in vivo imaging, especially in clinical routine, favors noninvasive, radiation-free imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Recent progress in MR sequence design, contrast agents and MR scanner technology saw the development of dedicated MR protocols that allow quantitative evaluations of tissue-specific structural and functional characteristics, e.g., tracking the transplantation of stem cells labeled with ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. In this chapter, we review imaging methods in tissue engineering with a clear focus on MRI, including its basic physical principles and applications in tissue engineering, but also provide a brief review of recent advances in non-MR imaging methods." @default.
