- W3216297050 abstract "The Caucasus is famous for its physical-geographic and geological characteristics, which ensured favourable conditions for exploiting metal ore and producing metal in ancient times. The wealth of the Caucasus in metalliferous ores has certainly contributed to the early beginning of ore exploitation in the South Caucasus, including Georgia. The prehistoric mining sites of Georgia may be found in two main districts: Aphkhazia, Svaneti and Racha in the Greater Caucasus, and Bolnisi-Dmanisi and Adchara-Guria in the Lesser Caucasus mountain range. Mining stone tools have been discovered on most of these sites. Research on the history of mining in Georgia is a fairly new field. This field had raised some interest in the 19th century, but no real archaeological excavations had been carried out on mining sites in Georgia until the Sakdrisi project. Investigations had so far been limited to surveys, which had only described the mines and recorded some material. And in most cases, the recorded and collected artefacts only consisted of well-preserved and modified mining tools. This paper will discuss the mining tools that are kept in archaeological funds or exhibited at the Georgian National Museum. These collections are not so very rich and varied, but they offer a good overview of common mining tool types. The stone and bone mining tools discovered at the Sakdrisi gold-mining complex will also be studied, especially as regards their use-wear. The gold mine of Sakdrisi is considered as the earliest gold-mining complex (the mine together with the mining settlement – that is the whole metal-producing system) so far known in human history. This complex has yielded a very interesting stone tool collection. They display very different shapes, use-wear traces, hafting systems, which suggest a wide range of functions. It should be noted that the use-wear investigations carried out on some of the obsidian implements and bone tools discovered at Sakdrisi also gave very interesting and fruitful results." @default.
