- W3216537356 abstract "In most Nigerian urban areas, Traffic Wardens, Road Safety Corps/ Road Safety Marshalls and Traffic Light Control Systems are commonly deployed at road intersections, roundabouts, bad road locations, accident scenes, road construction/ road repairs sites, etc. to guarantee that deadlocks are avoided which could lead to high road traffic congestions. However, the use of Traffic wardens, Road Safety Corps/Road Safety Marshalls are associated with time limits, that is, they are not commonly deployed at late hours of the night. They also suffer from the problems of fatigue which could lead to bad decision in the allocation of right of way to motorist. A better alternative to the former approaches is to engage the use of Traffic light control systems in the management of increasing road traffic congestions experienced in the urban areas of Nigerian roads. The use of Dynamic Phase Scheduling Traffic Light Control System has been proven to be more efficient than the Static Phase Scheduling Traffic Light Control System. In this paper, an attempt has been made using the simulation of urban mobility (SUMO) to improve upon the Dynamic Phase Scheduling Traffic Light Control System by optimizing the performance through the comparative analysis of three, four, five and seven fuzzy sets (FSs) of the fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The five FS with Gaussian membership functions in both the inputs and output gave an average waiting time of 4.45 s, which is lower than 6.29 s, 13.94 s, and 5.97 s for three, four and seven FSs in all the experimental setups. This result suggests that the choice of membership function that reflects the behavior of the domain (fuzzy set) is vital in modeling the FLC." @default.
