- W3216759969 abstract "This chapter describes the mechanism of action, physiologic effects, clinical use, and contraindications of the drugs used in equine anaesthesia, such as phenothiazines, butyrophenones, α2-adrenergic agonists, adrenergic antagonists, opioids, tramadol, trazadone, benzodiazepines, benzodiazepine antagonists, guaifenesin, ketamine, tiletamine and zolazepam, alfaxalone, propofol, barbiturates, and intravenous lidocaine. Acepromazine is the most commonly used phenothiazine in the domestic horse. Acepromazine interacts with a variety of receptors, displaying a number of effects in the central nervous system. Butyrophenone tranquilizers are mainly used in combination with other drugs to provide immobilization of feral and wild equine species. The use of opioids in horses has been controversial due to the inability of these drugs, when used alone, to cause reliable sedation or reduce minimum alveolar concentration." @default.
