- W3217071192 abstract "New tools have often been catalysts of scientific revolutions in neuroscience, from the role of the Golgi stain in the discovery of neurons to the recent transformation of systems neuroscience by both optogenetics and ground-breaking neuronal imaging methods. Sophisticated tools open doors to novel observations and ideas, but not all new tools are either feasibly adaptable to multiple related uses or equally accessible to neuroscientists. In this chapter, I will discuss the idea that the power of a new tool is not only dependent on its ability to reveal new potentially transformative phenomena but also on its adaptiveness, ease of use, and transferability. The impact of prohibitively complex or inaccessible tools is often limited by the relatively small number of laboratories that eventually use them, while the power of accessible and nimble tools is amplified by their wide dissemination. The ability to carry out replication and convergent follow up experiments is at the very heart of scientific revolutions in biology, and therefore most of the tools that fuel innovative leaps in neuroscience, and in other biological disciplines, are almost without exception very flexible and easily accessible to the majority of practitioners in their respective fields. I will illustrate these ideas by using examples from the recent history of neuroscience, and I will finish the chapter by predicting that a new set of tools that has just become available to neuroscientists, and with the properties mentioned above, will have a significant impact on the field, including in bridging the current gap between molecular and systems studies in neuroscience." @default.
