- W32171144 abstract "This chapter presents a comparison of women and men with regard to their response to strength and endurance training, sports related injuries, performance in hot and cold environments, and the effects of exercise on bone-mineral metabolism, blood chemistry, and reproductive physiology. Medical science recognizes that physical exercise and conditioning are important for the physical and mental health of both women and men. It is reasonable to conclude that women are not more susceptible to injury than men. Although relatively less-fit men and women are likely to be injured than better-fit individuals, there are no anatomical or physiological reasons for excluding women from any sports endeavor, provided she is sufficiently conditioned to participate. The exercising male, with relatively greater working muscle mass, produces more heat than a woman performing at the same relative workload, but the male has proportionally less body surface area over which heat loss occurs. Thus, the female has the advantage of less heat production and relatively greater surface area over which heat is dissipated. Numerous anecdotes of women who exercise throughout their pregnancy reveal that the health benefits of exercise continue throughout their pregnancy. The modern woman feels free to participate in sports and athletics uninhibited by social taboos. She does not fear losing her femininity by participation in physical conditioning and sports." @default.
