• W3217228498 abstract "<b>Introduction:</b> Hypoxemic COPD patients have accentuated muscle dysfunction that manifest as decreased muscle strength with reduced exercise capacity. In severely hypoxemic patients, reduced exercise capacity is predictive of increased health care utilization, increased risk of readmission following hospitalization for an exacerbation and mortality. NEMS is a method to restore exacerbated COPD patient’s functionality without generate dyspnoea. <b>Objective:</b> The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a NMES program in exercise capacity of hospitalized severely hypoxemic patients with COPD. <b>Methods:</b> In this clinical trial, hospitalized patients were randomly divided into three groups: control group, NMES group and exercise group. All groups received the standard medical treatment. The exercise group also received a daily breathing and physical exercise program. Finally, patients in the NMES group received daily lower limb exercises simultaneously to a NMES program. Static balance was assessed by the One Leg Standing Test and the lower limb strength was evaluated by Quadriceps Dynamometry. Patients were evaluated at baseline and at hospital discharge. <b>Results:</b> 64 hypoxic patients were finally included. There were no differences between groups at baseline in age, disease severity, BMI, FEV1%, FVC% and hospital stay. At discharge, there were significant differences between groups in static balance and lower limb strength in favour of the NEMS group. <b>Conclusion:</b> For hospitalized severely hypoxemic COPD patients, a NMES program can improve static balance and lower limb strength, improving exercise capacity." @default.
