- W3217409990 abstract "<b>Background:</b> Exercise provokes inflammatory response in healthy individuals. There is no consensus on acute exercise-induced cytokine response in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). <b>Aim:</b> To determine possible changes in the inflammatory response to incremental exercise test (IET) in COPD patients. <b>Methods:</b> Seventeen male COPD patients (50.9±6.2 years, FEV1=57.9±17.1% pred.) were enrolled. IET was performed on a cycle ergometer. Heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, dyspnea and fatigue perception using modified Borg Scale were assessed. Peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) was calculated. Blood samples were collected before and immediately after the IET. Pre and post-test plasma concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), soluble TNF-α receptor 1 (sTNFR-1), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured using ELISA. <b>Results:</b> The mean test duration, VO2peak, and %VO2peak were 9.1±1.0 min, 20.4±3.0 ml/kg/min, 68.4±9.8% pred., respectively. IET did not result in statistically significant alterations in circulating levels of IL-6 (27.2±25.2 vs. 25.6±25.6 ng/L), TNF-α (174.0±63.2 vs. 169.4±50.2 ng/L), sTNFR-1 (3.8±4.9 vs. 4.4±5.7 ng/L), and CRP (8.1±2.9 vs. 7.3±4.1 ng/mL) (p<0.05). <b>Conclusions:</b> Incremental exercise does not seem to elicit significant changes in inflammatory response. The short duration of exercise may not be sufficient to induce significant changes in the levels of circulating inflammatory mediators, or the inflammatory response to exercise may be abnormal or blunted in COPD patients. Further studies are needed to ascertain the exercise-induced inflammatory response considering type, duration, and intensity of exercise in COPD." @default.
