- W3217482015 abstract "Introduction: The relationship between short- or long-term continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) adherence and quality of life (QoL), anxiety, or depression is not completely understood. Aims: To evaluate the QoL, stress, and depression in OSAS patients before and after three and twelve months of CPAP therapy. Methods: 205 OSAS patients and 40 healthy controls were included in the study. Demographics and sleep parameters were recorded. The 36-item Short-Form Health Survey and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used to survey QoL and anxiety/depression, respectively. Results: OSAS patients were older (53.8±10.5 vs. 49.0±13.7, p=0.04), were more likely to be smokers (60% vs. 37.5%, p=0.014), had a higher BMI (42.1±4.2 vs. 39.8±3.7, p=0.001), had more frequent hypercholesterolemia (39% vs. 22.5%, p=0.05), thyroid disease (19.5% vs. 2.5%, p=0.005) or hypertension (46.8% vs. 15%, p<0.001) than controls. OSAS patients had a more negatively affected QoL (74.4±5.6 vs. 82.4±7.3, p<0.001) and higher levels of stress (9.8±2.9 vs. 8.5±2.4, p=0.004) than controls. No differentiation in depression levels was observed between the two groups (8.9±3.5 vs. 8±2.8, p>0.05). Apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) was negatively correlated with patients9 QoL (r=-0.8, p<0.001), and an independent predictor of impaired QoL, but it could not predict stress. After three or twelve months of CPAP treatment, levels of depression, anxiety, and QoL significantly improved. Conclusions: OSAS patients had an affected QoL and stress than controls. Short- and long-term CPAP use improved significantly all the study parameters." @default.
