- W32243777 abstract "Bait the hook well: this fish will bite. (Shakespeare, 1598) Potentially dangerous amounts of toxic and carcinogenic chemicals contaminate fish and shellfish caught in polluted waters. The attention and concern of the public was heightened when large numbers of winter flounder taken from Boston Harbor were found to have visible cancers of the liver. Renewed and more pointed alerts from the popular press came forth near the close of 1992 and intensified in 1993, divulging widespread and ubiquitous contamination of most waterways and native fish populations. These sentinel (or “natural”) alerts forecast hazardous situations in the environment that translate into negative public health situations, especially for individuals, families, and communities that are dependent on local fish for sustenance and for their economy. Laboratory experiments could be conducted in which rodents are fed contaminated fish to differentiate or “rank” potential human health risks. Induced toxicity and cancers in rodents would corroborate field observations and provide additional evidence for potential human health hazards from eating chemically contaminated fish or hazards for feral animals and birds consuming these fish. In the absence of any surrogate information, fish, shellfish, and other aquatic organisms should be viewed as persuasive biological monitors of pollution and of likely population health hazards. Authorities responsible for assuring clean and safe rivers, bodies of water, and biota must direct more attention to these valid biological indicators of environmental pollution." @default.
