Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. 308 pp. Paperback ISBN: 0-8058-3565-2, $69.95. Involved Fathering and Men's Adult Development: Provisional Balances explores whether men who engage in active parenting develop and mature differently from men who do not. Palkowitz interviewed 40 fathers from various cultures and stages of fathering. He surveyed them on topics related to the domains of self, social, and work. He suggests that there is little empirical research examining the relationship between parental maturity and father involvement from a life-course perspective. His goal was to identify some of the precursors of this maturational process. Throughout the book, Palkowitz highlights the issue of balance. For most of the men, the positive aspects of parenting outweigh any negatives, but most mention a constant struggle to balance their multiple responsibilities. The first section of the book examines previous research and theoretical perspectives significant to fathering and its effect on men's adult development. Palkowitz suggests that empirical support is lacking and that relevant theories of men's adult development do not present an integrated understanding. Palkowitz describes five major themes that emerge from the fathers' responses in this study. The most often expressed themes are that fatherhood activates a settling down process for men, motivates them to become more giving, entails major responsibilities, requires caring for the next generation, and initiates major life changes. The second section of the book explores how fathering influences the definition and view of one's self in the areas of emotions, faith, and health. Palkowitz reports that fathers experience more positive emotions than negative, that they are more sensitive to their own and others' emotions, and that they are better able to control their emotions as a result of their experiences as fathers. In terms of faith issues, many of the fathers in this study seem to emphasize serving as moral and spiritual guides rather than merely promoting organized religion. Finally, in regards to physical health, fathers report that they recognize the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles as models for their children, but many had a difficult time balancing family time and resources with their own fitness needs. The third section of the book examines how fatherhood intersects with the social networks of the men, particularly how this status impacts intimate relationships and relationships with other family members, friends, and the community. There was unanimous agreement among the participants that fatherhood has changed their relationships. They reported that parenting creates stress, more daily hassles, and less time for their partners, including less sexual intimacy. …" @default.
