- W32277516 abstract "This chapter discusses how changes in vitamin D metabolism with age affect bone loss. Skin changes associated with aging reduce the amount of 7-dehydrocholesterol, the precursor to cholecalciferol (vitamin D 3 ), as well as its rate of conversion. Absorption of dietary vitamin D is also reduced by as much as 40% in older individuals as compared to younger ones. The aging adult also has a reduction in the quantity and activity of the renal 1-α-hydroxylase, which affects the production of the most active metabolite of vitamin D, 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol). Although osteomalacia is the most recognized skeletal consequence of vitamin D deficiency, other abnormalities in bone metabolism can occur, such as osteoporosis, increase in bone turnover, and impact on parathyroid hormone and osteocalcin resulting in changes in bone mineral density. Although vitamin D deficiency is most often associated with effects on bone, vitamin D receptors are found in many tissues. The effects of vitamin D deficiency extend well beyond the skeleton. Other sites that vitamin D deficiency may affect include the brain, dermal capillaries, keratinocytes, macrophages, vascular smooth muscle cells, leukocytes, and the pancreas." @default.
