- W323844119 abstract "Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is an atypical form of parkinsonism. It is clinically characterized by a symmetric akinetic-rigid motor disorder in addition with supranuclear vertical gaze palsy, early postural instability with falls backward, and cognitive decline. Dysphagia occurs in up to 80% of PSP patients. Swallowing impairment in PSP is associated with severe clinical consequences such as impaired quality of life, difficulties in taking oral medications, dehydration, weight loss, malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, and poor outcome. Early detection of PSP-related swallowing dysfunction and timely interventions are mandatory. Dysphagia caused by PSP affects all stages of deglutition, i.e., oral preparatory stage, oral stage, pharyngeal stage, and esophageal stage. Besides clinical swallowing examination instrumental methods, i.e., fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing and videofluoroscopic, swallowing studies are used to assess the nature and severity of PSP-related dysphagia. Therapeutic strategies consist of swallowing training, nutritional management, pharmacological interventions, and tube feeding." @default.
